The Magic Of Upholstery

THE MAGIC OF UPHOLSTERY

One of our favourite aspects of Interior Design is the magic created by bringing back to life an old piece of furniture. Here at WOOLF Interior Architecture & Design we have many contacts in the upholstery and French polishing business that can work an absolute wonder with a piece of furniture in need of restoration expertise.

A SECRET LIFE OF THE LIVERY HALL – THE CITY OF LONDON

In our view, some of the most outstanding discreet and audacious historic architecture and interiors in The City of London are home to the splendid, sacred and secret world of the livery hall. Informal trade guilds began to form during the early Middle Ages and these associations became the first Livery Companies. Originally charged to act as formal Governance Bodies for their namesake trades, the Companies also offered fraternal, religious and social aspects to their members. The majority of Livery Halls survived the Great Fire of London in 1666 and were then built on or rebuilt for their members during the 1800s.

Designing architecture and interiors for film

DESIGNING ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIORS FOR FILM

Prior to qualifying an interior architect and setting up WOOLF Interior Architecture & Design, Verity worked as an art director and later a production designer in the film industry. During this time, she developed a reputation for creating otherworldly spaces in television and film productions, many of which were science fiction or period dramas. There is a huge overlap between film, art, interiors, fashion and architecture. All of these genres influence the way in which we understand the world around us and this is what we tune into on our projects at WOOLF.

THE BRUTON EFFECT: THE NEWT, OSIP, THE CHAPEL, HAUSER & WIRTH

Bruton in Somerset has always been a lovely picturesque village, but today it is home to many wonderful shops, café's, restaurants and art galleries many of which are creatively aligned with WOOLF Interior Architecture & Design. As a High End Interior Design studio based both in Bath and London, we share an affinity with the new and emerging enterprises that have emerged in Frome, Bradford-on-Avon and Bruton. The village of Bruton dates back at least the Domesday Book of 1086 and has experienced an influx of new activity and creativity in recent years, leading it to be labelled the “next Chipping Norton” with British Vogue calling it “the new Notting Hill”.

DESIGNING INTERIORS FOR PERIOD HOMES

This journal follows on from our recent post about Historic Architecture. The projects WOOLF Interior Architecture & Design undertake are varied and we have worked on houses both from a contemporary and historic vernacular. Predominantly, though, we work to retain the elegance of a period property, whether it be Georgian, Victorian or Edwardian in form, either to retain an historic interior or to create a more modern space within the historic exterior.
