Glin Castle is an iconic historic Irish house, home to the Fitzgerald family, an exquisite boutique hotel borne out of the family’s heritage and a viable commercial concern. Glin Castle, has been home for 800 years to the FitzGerald family, hereditary Knights of Glin. It stands proudly in the middle of its 400 acre wooded like a toy fortress, echoed by three sets of battlemented Gothic folly lodges.

A Period Property Steeped in History, Limerick, Ireland
Standing on the banks of the River Shannon, Glin Castle encapsulates the enduring presence of Ireland’s aristocratic past and the potential of its future. This historic property, home to generations of the FitzGerald family, commands a sense of heritage, elegance, and significance. WOOLF provided hotel interior design consultancy and design direction for the next chapter of Glin Castle’s evolution - transforming it into an exclusive hospitality destination while preserving the integrity of its architectural soul. The collaboration combined strategic vision with aesthetic precision, ensuring the family’s history and castle’s timeless grandeur would resonate with guests.
Defining a Sense of Place in a Heritage Castle
Every period property holds a story, and for this magnificent historic castle it was important to deliver luxury hospitality, a story that had to be articulated through brand clarity and spatial identity. WOOLF approached Glin Castle as both curator and strategist, producing a hotel consultancy framework deeply intertwined with its cultural heritage. The aim was to define a distinct brand narrative that felt authentic to the period property while relevant to the sensibilities of today’s guests. This process balanced the romantic symbolism of the family and Ireland’s history with the expectations of modern luxury: discretion, exclusivity, and immersive experience. The outcome was a brand position that connects tradition to contemporary refinement, rooted in a tangible sense of place.
Honouring the Historic Fabric
For a heritage property with the gravitas of Glin Castle, every design decision required sensitivity and restraint. WOOLF ensured that the interior design of the Irish castle respected the historic fabric while ensuring the interiors were crafted for modern use. The approach fused architectural authenticity with subtle gestures of comfort and luxury. Antique furnishings were restored, with great attention was given to curating the extensive art collection and ensured that the lighting celebrated the character of each room. The mood is one of quiet continuity, where guests are transported into a haven of luxury and country comforts. This sensitive combination of preservation and renewal defines WOOLF’s methodology for working with historic properties.
The Art of Emotional Interior Design
What distinguishes Glin Castle is not simply its architecture, but the atmosphere it evokes. The interior design reflects hospitality as a living art form, inviting, intimate, and profoundly personal. WOOLF’s design narrative moves beyond aesthetics to focus on emotional resonance. Each room, from the drawing room to the bedrooms, has been crafted to tell part the castles story. The result is an immersive hotel experience that feels deeply rooted in Irish history yet gracefully aligned with the expectations of a boutique country house hotel stay.
Setting the Standard for Boutique Hotel Hospitality
Glin Castle now stands as a benchmark in WOOLF’s hotel interior design consultancy and design portfolio - a demonstration of how period properties can transition into luxury hospitality destinations without sacrificing their identity. This commercial interior design project reflects WOOLF’s expertise in historic interior design and establishing a brand narrative. With a deep understanding of brand DNA, authenticity, and spatial storytelling, WOOLF continues to consult and design for residential and commercial projects where heritage, narrative, and modern luxury coexist in balance.
